Egypt has put forward a proposal concerning around 200 Hamas fighters believed to be trapped in tunnels beneath the Israeli-held Rafah area of Gaza, according to Ynet, as reported by the Palestinian news agency Ma’an. Under the proposed plan, the fighters would hand over their weapons to Egypt and provide new information about tunnel locations to allow their destruction. In return, they would be granted “safe passage” into areas under Hamas control. Two sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters that the offer has been conveyed to both Israel and Hamas, but neither side has yet approved it and negotiations are ongoing.
