Palestinian private schools in occupied East Jerusalem announced Monday that they will suspend classes starting Tuesday until further notice, protesting Israel’s failure to renew entry permits for a large number of teachers and staff from the occupied West Bank, Anadolu reports. The decision came as the 2026-2027 school year is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Jerusalem. Private school owners said in a statement that the suspension was prompted by Israeli authorities’ failure to renew entry permits for “a large number of teachers and staff without prior notice.” They said schools’ lack of preparedness in health, hygiene, security and safety measures posed an additional obstacle to the start of a safe and stable academic year.
