Sudan’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has announced that the electricity interconnection capacity between Sudan and Egypt has been increased to 75 megawatts, as the two countries move ahead with plans to expand cross-border power supplies. The ministry said the additional capacity is intended to help stabilise electricity supplies in Sudan and support residential and agricultural activities, particularly in the country’s Northern State. Sudanese and Egyptian officials have also agreed to accelerate the second phase of the electricity interconnection project, which is expected to raise transmission capacity to 300 megawatts. Further phases are planned with the aim of eventually increasing the interconnection capacity to 1,000 megawatts, according to the ministry.
